NB-IoT or WiFi for a connected tank?

Compare the connection needs of NB-IoT and WiFi sensors to choose for your installation.

NB-IoT and WiFi: different connection needs

A WiFi sensor needs an accessible local network at its installation point. An NB-IoT sensor uses a compatible mobile network. With Tankio, you do not need to extend your WiFi to the tank. The key check is local NB-IoT coverage; no radio technology guarantees reception in every cellar or beneath every cover.

Check coverage on site

Connection depends on NB-IoT coverage at the device location. Mobile reception on your phone alone does not confirm sensor reception. Depth, concrete, soil and metal obstacles can weaken the signal. Confirm that a reading arrives with the device in its final position, including with the tank cover closed.

Understand battery life

Battery life depends on reception conditions, transmission frequency and device use. A difficult connection can require more energy. When comparing sensors, look at the conditions behind the stated battery life and the planned maintenance rather than a duration without context.

Install, switch on, configure

Install the device following its instructions and switch it on. In the Tankio app, configure the tank with its capacity and the requested dimensions. Check that a first reading appears and that the displayed level matches your water supply. Setup takes three steps, with no network equipment to install in the house.

  1. Install. Install the device on your tank following the instructions.
  2. Switch on. Switch on the device to start the NB-IoT connection.
  3. Configure. Configure the tank in the app, then check the first readings.
